Sherborne New Castle

This is Sherborne New Castle. It was built (not personally, I’m sure) by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 because the Old Castle (dating from the 12th century) wasn’t modern enough for him. Sir Walt popularised smoking in England and legend has it that one day when he was sat in the grounds of Sherborne Castle having a puff a servant thought he was on fire and threw a bucket of water on him.
