I am a graphite artist based in Dorset. I’m self-taught and takes much of my inspiration from the people and places in this beautiful part of the world. My landscapes capture the movement of the sea and the essence of the place with accurate but lively drawing. My portraits capture the personality of the person in the picture.
“The people and places, the moments in time that I draw have to mean something to me or it doesn’t work. But I hope my drawings mean something to other people, too.”
Every drawing starts with a reference photo. I then spends a lot of time looking at the photo before I start, deciding on the story it is telling and what I want to say about it. Starting with a simple outline, the picture is built up stroke by stroke, resulting in a drawing that is full of life.
“A pencil is, for me, the most direct way of connecting what’s going on in my head, what I’m seeing and thinking and feeling, with the paper. It’s a simple organic medium. My drawings are a reflection of that connection, a unique combination of realism and emotion which I hope results in something even more.”
