Distant Views of Portland

Along the section of the Jurassic Coast from the Isle of Purbeck as far as Lyme Regis the Isle of Portland is a constant presence. It’s not a true island, being connected to the Dorset mainland by a narrow causeway and by Chesil Beach, which starts at Portland and ends at the pretty village of Abbotsbury. It’s a fascinating place, shaped by centuries of quarrying and constantly battered by the elements.

I hadn’t realised it at the time but it turns out Portland is sitting in the background of quite a few of my drawings. I accidentally made a series of pictures of distant views of Portland, so I thought it would be fun to include them all here, in one place.
