SGFA Membership

Please forgive this rather self-indulgent post. . .

I was recently made a full member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art, also known as the Drawing Society. It was founded in 1919 and currently has around 160 members. It’s the only art society in the UK that has a focus on drawing skills.

To become a member you first have to have work accepted into at least two of the society’s annual open exhibitions. You then submit a portfolio of work and examples of sketchbooks, which is reviewed by a committee. If accepted you become an associate member.

The Beginning of Everything, my first Open Exhibition entry. (The title was a coincidence!)

You need to be continue to be active in the society for three years as an associate member before you are invited to be promoted to a full member, so this has been five years in the making. (Actually six years because I was first selected for 2020’s open exhibition, which was made null and void by the pandemic.)

Anyway, basically I am very proud to be a member of this fantastic society. I’m in awe of the work of the other members, who are all ridiculously talented. It’s inspiring, if not also quite intimidating, to be in their company.
